Course Description
Computer Science is often misunderstood as just monotonous lines of code, but it’s fundamentally a way of thinking—a method to reason through problems logically and efficiently. It is one of today's most valuable career sectors, offering problem-solving skills applicable in countless situations.
Our program covers key computer science principles, such as conditionals, data types, and iteration principles, through the exciting context of designing and building Lego robots. This hands-on approach encourages collaboration and teamwork, providing practical experience in both coding and engineering.
Our goal is to combine straightforward computer science methods with practical robotics applications to inspire and encourage talented minds, ensuring no potential is left untapped. By involving students in the creative process of robotics, we make learning both fun and impactful.
Learning Goals
Principles of Computer Science
Our program dives into the core principles of computer science, covering key concepts including but not limited to creative development, algorithms and programming, and the impact of computing. These skills are taught in a manner that students will be able to relate to, such as through a game of basketball, hopscotch, or even duck duck goose! Students will learn to approach problems logically and efficiently, developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By acquiring a foundation for these fundamental principles, students can apply computational thinking to a variety of real-world scenarios, preparing them for studies and opportunities in the field.
Robotic Design
Using Lego education robotic kits, students engage in hands-on projects to design and build their own robots. This practical approach encourages creativity and innovation, allowing our students to see the real time results of their efforts. Through collaboration and teamwork on a common bot, students pair up to gain experience in both engineering and coding, putting to work the principles of computer science the students have already learned. The interactive nature of robotic design makes learning engaging and impactful, with a hope to inspire students to explore further in STEM fields.
Foundations for Programming
Our program provides an introduction to foundational programming concepts, essential for any aspiring coder. Students will learn the basics of block coding languages through the programming of their own robots, with a heavy focus on iteration, data types, and conditionals. This solid grounding in programming prepares learners to pursue future courses in higher level coding. By building a strong foundation, students gain confidence and competence in their coding and computational thinking abilities, setting the stage for future success in computer science.
